Alan Kristal

Keynote speaker
Dr. Kristal is a Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Washington and Associate Head of the Cancer Prevention Program at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, both in Seattle, Washington.  His primary research interests are in cancer prevention, with an emphasis on prostate cancer prevention and nutritional epidemiology.  His current projects include studies on: (1) associations of diet, steroid hormones, growth factors, systemic inflammation and oxidative stress with the risk of prostate cancer; (2) effects of supplementation with vitamin E and selenium on risks of prostate cancer risk and other chronic diseases; (3) effects of sulforaphane on in vivo molecular markers of prostate cancer risk; (4) associations of steroid hormones, diet, systemic inflammation and commonly-used medications with the risk of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH); and (5) role of nutritional status on response to treatment for HIV and HIV-related cancer in Uganda.  He is a senior editor of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention and associate editor of the American Journal of Epidemiology.
